The Putorana plateau is a protected Siberian plateau

Looking at photos of the Putorana plateau, it may seem that in front of you like some sort of lost world in Ireland. But no, it is here, in Siberia.

Putorana reserve is a huge basaltic plateau located in North-West Siberia. The North and West side of the plateau looks like a giant staircase because of the steep ledges. The Putorana is often called the land of thousands of lakes and waterfalls, and no wonder, because there really are more waterfalls in Russia. Just enjoy this incredible nature alone and without preparation is difficult, it is better to use the services of a guide, otherwise you can get lost in the deep gorges and canyons. A large part of the Central Siberian plateau is a nature reserve, created in 1988, which is considered one of the largest in Russia.

Boundless basalt plateau

Thanks trap (stepped) topography, this area is so like the scientists, especially geologists and geomorphologist. The Putorana consists of complex mountain ranges with flat tops, separated by wide and deep ditches in the form of a ladder. Such relief appeared immediately after the uplift of the lava plateau, which was formed back in the Mesozoic era through the spout strikingly large mass of hot basalt rocks. Power Putorana snow cover lava equals a mile, and in places exposed slopes may see up to forty layers.

Canyons and lake plateau valley

With years of tectonic faults took rivers and deep lakes (Lama, Deep, Dog, Khantaika, Ayan, etc.) that have shaped the unique character of the area. These unusual reservoirs are sometimes stretched for 150 kilometers and their depth in some cases up to 400 meters, which puts them on a par with the largest of the Siberian lakes (Baikal and Teletskoe). Plateau has about 25 thousand lakes, 18 of which are stretched on the area more than 10 square kilometers. Often in these places you can see the waterfalls, one of the highest irrigates the valley of the river Kanda, its height more than hundred meters.

On the Putorana plateau is a rare combination of several climatic zones with a huge variety of vegetation and animals. Here you can meet larch taiga and montane tundra. In a conservation area is more than four hundred different plant forms, including many endemic plants.

The Putorana Plateau

The massif includes more than thirty species of mammals. Plateau is located on the migration route of the world’s largest population of wild reindeer, which has more than five hundred thousand heads. It was here he decided to settle unique bighorn sheep, rare in nature. When he pulled away from his main form, he had to develop separately. The protected area includes about 150 species of birds including the white-tailed eagle, Merlin and other unique birds. The Putorana nature reserve visit often migratory birds resting on the different Putorana reservoirs.

For plateau characteristic unusual flood relief, which consists of strong performances in the form of steps, and a kind of table mountain, that rises over the sea at a height of five thousand feet wide and ordinary pits.

The number of waterfalls on the Central plateau affects them more than any Russian area. On the planet there is a hill, which could boast of such an abundance and depth of lakes. There are about 25 thousand in length sometimes reaching 150 kilometers, and some lakes are very deep — up to 0.5 miles.

Putorana nature reserve features an amazing combination of plant and animal species in different zones, among them are forest (North), bald bald (mountain-forest-tundra), bald (mountain tundra) and high-rise landscape.

Putorana nature reserve

On the Putorana plateau, it grows in almost 1500 species of plants. For example, on the territory of the rivers Kutaramakan and Irokinda are the North-Eastern border of distribution of Siberian spruce and larch.

The protected area is characterized by its location within the zoogeographical boundaries of the Yenisei, which is the largest meridional biogeographic boundary of Eurasia. This was the emergence of such diverse fauna. Just this basalt plateau has the Northern border of the habitat of flying squirrels, sable, lynx and stone grouse.

On the Central plateau one can meet more than 30 species of mammals, 180 species of birds, 35 species of fish and 1 amphibian species. The plateau became a refuge for the neighbouring reindeer, and also for the lesser known forms of the North sheep, many thousands of years ago separated from the main population. The Putorana plateau is famous for rare bird species: pisculli, Curlew, little and white-billed loons, red-breasted goose and the skopa.
