The lightest gas

The lightest gas

The lightest gas is the most common in our Universe the element is hydrogen. A significant part of stars and stellar matter are composed mainly of this gas.

Informed by means of hydrogen in the air rose the airships and balloons, but since this gas is very explosive when interacting with oxygen, it was many tragic flights. It was therefore decided not to use more hydrogen and fill the balloons with helium.

The historical facts of the discovery of gas light

In the XVI-XVII centuries, the scientists-chemists all over the world watched the interaction of metals and acids generates combustible gas selection. This fact drew the attention of our compatriot Mikhail Lomonosov. But the detailed study of this gas is amenable to the English scientist Cavendish, who called it «inflammable air». However, some biases did not give the chemist to find the right answer with respect to this gas. But French scientists have completed a study, making the first synthesis of water, and then use hot iron, decomposition of water vapor. As a result, they got this conclusion – this flammable gas is present in the composition of the water, and, therefore, it is possible easily to obtain this gas.

Hydrogen: main properties

Molecule Wodny

This is the easiest gas much lighter than air (in 14.5 times). So you can see how filled with hydrogen soap bubbles start to rise up in the air. The molecule of hydrogen, which is diatomic, has the highest speed in comparison with molecules of other gases. In this regard, the molecules of a light gas is capable of high speed transfer of heat from one object to another, which indicates the high thermal conductivity of the gas, which is 7 times higher given the characteristics of air.

This gas, being in absolutely normal conditions, has no odor, taste and color. He is well able to dissolve in a large number of metals, especially in palladium. In silver, as well as in the water it is almost insoluble. With lightweight oxygen gas forms the most necessary and common substance on our planet – water. And every organic mix to meet the hydrogen interacts with the carbon.

Hydrogen includes 3 isotope. This protium, deuterium, often also called «heavy» hydrogen,» and tritium, which is radioactive. Light gas is widely used in various industries (for example, is the hydrogenation of oils and fats).

The hydrogen in the liquid state is a colorless, fluid and easy liquid and solid hydrogen is snegopady crystal-like mass. This gas has only one electron, detects characteristics of the Halogens and alkali metals.

Hydrogen and helium

It has already been mentioned that instead of gas for flying was used helium. However, sometimes they are next to each other, so they should be considered together. So the Sun is a mixture of hydrogen and helium (ratio 4:1). The hydrogen in this case is nuclear fuel, «burning star», and a helium – nuclear «ashes».

Hydrogen and helium

Every second the sun loses some of its mass – this happens when you convert the light gas helium, that is, a certain percentage of hydrogen becomes helium.
