Little known facts about the Chernobyl accident
In 1986, the fire and the explosion had damaged the reactor of the fourth unit of the Chernobyl NPP. The consequences of this were significant radioactive release, the resettlement of people from the 30-kilometer zone around the station and the creation of a concrete «sarcophagus» around the damaged unit. However, today the public is not all knows about the accident.
The number of victims is not precisely determined
About a hundred employees of the plant and firefighters, who extinguished the fire, died within a few weeks. But then it becomes harder to link specific cancers with exposure to radiation. The only exception is one rare case of a tumor of the thyroid gland.
Various international organizations have different opinions of the number of victims. Thus, Greenpeace believes that the number of direct victims of the accident exceeds 90 thousand, while the UN calls a much more modest number – 4000. Also there are many people affected by the crisis to a lesser degree. Some estimate their number almost 3 million 350 thousand people were moved from the 30-km zone.
Exclusion zone as a nature reserve
Ukrainian and foreign researchers note that the lack of pressure from the people led to a sharp increase in the area of abundance and diversity of wildlife. In addition, the area now serves as a «reserve» for the wolves and birds of prey. In some species (particularly mice) the occurrence of congenital malformations have increased, but still the mutant monsters in the zone not. It seems that man for «brothers smaller», where the dangers of radiation.
The population of the Chernobyl zone
So, the 30-kilometer zone is not deserted. Some time after the evacuation of a number of people returned home. They were mostly older people, who did not want to die away from home.
Now the population of the area are elderly, or rather, mostly my grandmother. They live in their family homes, livestock, orchards treated with and not very worried that the earth which they dug potatoes will be radioactive for thousands of years. Women believe that they made the right choice. They saw, in what conditions were their evacuated relatives and friends. For her age old women fairly healthy and active. From time to time they are imported commodities.
Dead forest of Chernobyl
This is «landmark». Indeed, immediately after the accident, some forest areas have become «red», leaves and needles have polizeli from the effects of radiation. Now some of these trees came to life and again are green. And the dead too are not rot, fall off and do not decompose.
Scientists explain this by the fact that radiation destroy not only the trees themselves, but also a significant part of fungi and microorganisms, which have to recycle dead wood. Away from the dangerous area trying to stay and insects, so dead trees and stored for a long time. «Red forest» is now the most radioactive place on Earth. In this regard, a huge danger are forest fires in the vicinity of the station (allegedly took place last year), because the clouds of dangerous smoke for this reach of Kiev and other major cities.
Chernobyl in the x-ray room
Reliable is the fact that a normal x-ray examination at the hospital provides the person much greater dose of radiation than a short excursion to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Indeed, otherwise, long ago there would be no «Chernobyl grandmothers», scientists would be unable to regularly visit the area. Meanwhile, the scientific and regulatory mission are in the area and close it constantly.
But if you know that x-rays of the pelvis delivers a radiation dose of 700 µsv, employees of the power plant before the accident received a dose of 100 mSv of gamma radiation during the day and stay in the zone today gives only 5-7 mSv, the behavior of these people no longer seem self-destructive heroism.
