In the XIX century in the Botanical garden of Berlin there are many new plants, especially from the Mediterranean, and its territory was already too small for such a collection. In the years 1897-1910 garden is moving into new territory in Dahl, where he was allocated 42 hectares. At this time, was built greenhouse, which covers an area of 8600 sq m and consists of 16 different rooms. The Berlin Botanical garden and Conservatory was open to the public. At the Botanical garden are located in the Department of geography of plants, rock gardens and wilderness, the Department of taxonomy, arboretum, water garden, fragrant garden, division of food plants, «Kurfurstendamn», the greenhouse.
Just outside the gates of the Botanical garden, we came across the sculpture of the sower of the lawn. The main walkway leads from the entrance of the garden to the greenhouse. In this way you can enjoy the beautiful lake views, forest glades, and flower gardens, relax on the bench or in the gazebo among the flowering plants.
Walking through the halls of the Conservatory may take less time than a tour of the entire garden. Fifteen areas are located in a circle behind each other, they are represented by different climatic zones, and you can see plants from all over the world. In a large tropical greenhouse with height of 28 meters you can get an impression of species diversity in the tropics of the Old and New world.
Along with this is a hall with tropical plants used for food and production, for example, cocoa beans, coffee, bananas and others. In this room there are many birds that fill their Twitter space. I even managed to see the nest of one such tropical birds, which she had built quite close to the track.
Very attractive room with orchids, where there are about 1200 species of these epiphytes! Here are cultivated and wild variety of orchids. Sixty of these species grow naturally in Germany, they can be seen as a Botanical garden and natural landscapes.
An interesting and unusual room with ferns, where there are tree-ferns, of medium size, growing in the ground and attached to the walls. It is also supported by a special regime: high temperature and humidity, so you feel like in the humid tropics. Because of the damp soil and stones overgrown with moss. In the hall of bromeliads too, from time to time to create a fog. Most bromeliads grow on trees or rocks and get nutrients from the soil and air. Their leaves form a Cup where water and a litter of other plants. Such a meager food enough these epiphytic plants.
Here plants can be enjoyed from two levels, walking along the track or from a high balcony. To create high humidity in the hall equipped with special devices made stream with waterfalls. Across the Creek spanned by a picturesque bridge. Among the bromeliads I had to spend a lot of time, as the lens of the camera from condensed water, and had to wait for my technique to «get used» to the environment.
Further along the route – succulents store water. They are located in two halls: one with plants from the Old world, and in the other from the New. In the second room, amaze with the variety and sizes of cacti. There are instances reaching a height of three to four meters.
In addition, in the greenhouse of the Botanical garden there is a little known plants from Australia and New Zealand, insectivorous.
Winter is beautiful in the hall, where the camellias are in bloom. Summer in the hall, where aquatic plants, including Victoria amazonica. There is a hall with the flora of the Canary Islands. Before it was a room for the winter, but for several years here are of the Mediterranean flora and many endemic species from the Canary archipelago. In a large tropical greenhouse since 1991, growing Welwitschia mirabilis. It was discovered in 1859 by the German Friedrich Velicham. It is found only in the desert of Namibia, the oldest desert of the world, and in the South of Angola. It is the only species in the family valeviciene, it refers to gymnosperms. Infinity is a dioecious plant, i.e. it has male and female specimens. During his long life (up to 2000 years), it develops only two leaves that continuously grow in length.
All halls greenhouses of the Botanical garden attractively designed with natural materials from the respective areas. Along the route are benches where you can sit and admire the particularly beautiful places.
Very interesting rock garden in the Berlin Botanic garden. Here is created by the rock gardens, which feature a different mountain region in the world: the Alps, Caucasus, Carpathians, and many others. In each of the structures of not only plants, but rocks present in the corresponding area. Almost the entire season here you can watch the flowering, which attracts not only visitors, but also many insects.
In the Department of geography of plants presents plants from different areas. There are parts of repeating a particular landscape, specially chosen trees, shrubs and herbs. There is composition, which shows the natural surroundings of Berlin. Interesting to visit the land of swamps, fens and bogs, with thickets of Heather. In fens can see an interesting tree Taxodium distichum. It grows in damp places and has an original respiratory roots that rise above the water.
In the Berlin Botanical garden and wonder to botanists, and people who are not related with this science. Special signs telling interesting facts about the characteristics of plants and natural communities.
Picturesque meadows and ponds help you relax and enjoy the beautiful views. At any time of the year here is something to see. Even in bad weather you can walk along the paths of a large greenhouse and would like to travel back in time to warmer climes.
