Borromean Islands — Isola Madre and Isola Bella
Borromean Islands – Isola Madre and Isola Bella on lake Maggiore, the most Western lake in Northern Italy are named after their owners, well-known Milanese family. Bell island, was until the XVI century a lonely cliff with a few houses, while the count Borromeo III, decided for his wife Isabella to make the island habitable. With the assistance of the architect Angelo Crivelli he created a wonderful Palace and gardens. In the name of the island is hidden the name of the wife of the count, Isabella d’adda. On Isola Madre were arranged in a magnificent Botanical garden.The lakes of Italy have always attracted educated travelers, could not resist the charms of their waters Pliny the Younger, P. Shelley, F. Stendhal and D. H. Lawrence. «What can you say about lake Garda, or on the Borromean Islands, or lake Como, one can only pity those who doesn’t get crazy,» wrote F. Stendahl.
