Where and how to watch the Perseids
Modern Russian man deprived of cosmic joy at the stage of school education when the studied items were thrown out the old astronomy, believing that it will not be useful to anyone. But we have a very serious cosmic roots, because the first man to walk in space, was our man — Yuri Gagarin. And the universe with our blood will not corrode any of the legislative initiatives of the Ministry of education. And if the world will plunge into total darkness of ignorance and obscurantism, and evolution is set back, then we, armed with sticks and stones, we will still gaze at the sky, hoping to see a miracle.
What a pity that the lights of the big cities hide night the heavenly bodies — that is the charge for progress. But, fortunately, this weekend you have a wonderful opportunity to see the explosion of fire in the night sky. You will seem like along the Ground, fly hundreds of space ships disappear in bright flashes. This friend of ours, meteor storm, called the Perseids. Today we’ll tell you not only about nature but also about how to prepare for this heavenly fire show, the peak of which will be held the night of Thursday to Friday or the night of Friday to Saturday (the data vary).
Let’s start with a little educational insight into the concept of a meteor stream. The first thing to understand regarding meteor stream is the fact that it is not a meteor shower. These are two different phenomena. They differ just a meteor shower «going through» the atmosphere of the planet, and a meteor storm — no, meteors burn up in the atmosphere. The second thing you need to know specifically about the Perseids is that this meteor stream is formed by a plume of dust particles of the comet swift-Tuttle (named for the discoverers, 26 kilometers in diameter). Moreover, our planet does not necessarily take to affect the comet itself — it is approaching us once in 135 years (the last time was in 1993, when recorded from 200 to 500 meteors per hour), but the remnants of its tail passes through our atmosphere annually. This is due to the heating of small particles of ice and dust — they are moving us from the center of the Solar system under the influence of the solar wind. We are very lucky that Russia is located in the Northern hemisphere, because the constellation Perseus, from which the meteor storm is moving at 55 degrees North of the equator.
In General, every year our planet was attacked by countless particles of the nucleus of comet swift-Tuttle, with the result that we are seeing hundreds of celestial lights. Largely, thanks to the Perseids (which is the largest regular meteor stream), we see all these crazy people who roam the fields hoping to find the crashed space ship. The spectacle is really big. The particles penetrate the planet’s atmosphere at a speed of more than 150 thousand miles per hour, and they move along different trajectories. Can appear in the form of straight line, dotted line, number of lines and even in the form of fireballs. It is not surprising that earlier like heavenly riot explained from the position of the divine nature. In medieval Europe, the Perseids were called » Tears of St. Lawrence, as the festival of St. Lawrence, completed in Italy, comes just at the peak of the meteor stream.
The difference this year
Yes, perhaps we will not see 500 meteors per hour, which covered the Northern skies in 1993, but this season is also rich catch. If to speak about average values of the frequency, the August 2016 will generate 1.5 times more meteors from comet swift-Tuttle is about 150 pieces per hour, instead of the usual hundreds. If we compare this figure with the amount of fireballs (meteors level according to the brightness of Venus) which often accompany the Perseids, the look is beautiful — it is for a romantic trip with my girlfriend or philosophical journey alone.
In General, we are very surprised by the fact that three of the maximum, which say local astronomers, will be broadcast in our atmosphere, the plumes that was formed in 1079, 1479 and 1862. Do you imagine? Are you going to watch the meteors, who were peers of Henry IV, the unification of Spain, the Civil war in the United States. It’s just crazy! And to watch him you don’t need a lot of resources — took the car, planned the route, found a company and go!
Where and how to watch the Perseids
All the appropriate people without professional telescopes are beginning to see the meteors around midnight on August 11. The light of the moon a little will give your position and, if you get to the right place, the picture will be wonderful. Some mistakenly believe that the Perseids should be visible from the point of radiant (the point from which meteors fly), but your astronomers already know that from this point of view, open only a brief flash, but if you look to the South or West (45 degrees above the horizon), we can see the most delicious episodes of space battles.
Where to go? Anywhere, just away from the bustle of the city and the sparkling advertising signs. You need darkness to see the starry sky in all its glory. We would recommend you to equip the company to go to the mountains, because there will be more than worthy of this event. And, closer to nature, the closer to awareness of the universe, isn’t it? To take a particularly nothing, except something to eat, warm clothes, a sleeping bag (not on bare earth to lie) and a little patience. If you have a telescope, then take it, although such a large cluster of meteors seen without it.
