Dark jazz: a night of music under the glass of Bourbon
What happens if you take the free improvisation of jazz and put it in a dark and dirty place some dark and smoky bar cheap cigarettes, where one of the local detectives questioned the waitress about the terrible murder committed last night? If you try to convey such an atmosphere of music, won an amazing dark jazz. Perhaps you have heard it. This music is built largely on improvisation, saxophone and keys, but also electronic element and a light vocal she’s not a stranger. The main thing – to convey the atmosphere you create in your mind unique images that show the painting with melodies. This music often sounds like the soundtrack to various films, and understandably so, because the musicians often draw inspiration from Noir films or horror movies old school.
We have tried to collect for you five cool bands and projects that play in this genre. And if you will find yourself in splendid isolation in some Friday evening, and from my window can see dark streets of the city with its eternal bustle, don’t forget to include the composition of each of the groups below. A glass of Bourbon will add a pleasant pastime.
1. The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
A slightly electronic sound, laced with plenty of saxophone and violin. Considerable influence in the songs «The Killimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble» provides a dark ambient with your dreary and dark atmosphere. Melody imperceptibly flow into one another and not tie you to a specific rhythm and perception of music. Jason Cohen subsequently changed the name of its project on «The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation», and changed the music that is headed in the direction of dark ambient and doom jazz.

2. Dale Cooper Quartet & The Dictaphones
A Quartet of Brest, a small city in France. Great smoky sound and just a wonderful saxophone. Similar to improvisation, which is carried out under a relaxed and good rhythm of the drums. The team is named in honor of Dale Cooper is a fictional character of the TV series «twin Peaks», an FBI special agent. One of the most popular habits of this character, record their own thoughts and observations to the recorder, to appeal to a certain Diana. The music of this Quartet is reminiscent of the soundtracks to the dark auteur films of Lynch. Clean Dark Jazz that is equally well accommodates as samples – clippings from various films and the sounds of saxophone, guitar and trumpet. Great music.

3. Somewhere off Jazz Street
It’s gorgeous. Absolutely amazing rhythm. The musicians use a rather unconventional moves. Technically the music is similar to the original, improvisational jazz. Saxophonist fun on the record, taking the melody in a totally amazing party. The rhythm section supports it, but the brass are Central to this band, even though the keys play a prominent role. The group carries us somewhere in the first half of the twentieth century, in some den or dark narrow alleys of new York. The founder of this electronic-jazz project is Bases Hendricks. It is strange that all music that you hear in his albums, all played on the keys. Bases saxophonist, and he uses the computer to bring their music need sound.

4. Heroin and Your Veins
Guy from Finland, whose name is Janne Perttula creates wonderful instrumental music. And maybe sounding it has some inconsistencies, but, of course, it has its own voice. Some unusual melancholy emanates from his compositions. He says that he’s very influenced by the Noir aesthetic, the songs of Tom waits and Franz Kafka. That’s really good.
5. Bohren & der Club of Gore
Probably the most famous band of the genre that, in fact, not surprising: always high level and very sound composite component. Listen to them – a pleasure. The debut album was recorded in 1994 for one day, then your style they described as Horror Jazz, but they were subsequently attributed to dark jazz. In fact, they are the pioneers of this style. Largely thanks to them you can hear the music of other bands of this genre. Instrumental music, in which no extra element and which is just wild. Hypnotism and avarice obvious musical elements have in common their style from ambient, but not ambient. In essence, Bohren & der Club of Gore have a melody that is just extremely slow. But it does not want to accelerate – it is so cool and does its job.
