Add a little life postmodernism
Today we continue a series of short philosophical guides and will introduce or remind you about this wonderful cultural currents like post-modernism. No, we are not in the literature, or philosophy. Dude, we’re just looking for ways, how the knowledge of the great minds and work of talented people can help make life easier. We have already talked about stoicism, and Epicureanism Nietzscheanism, but now it’s time to learn something new…
In may, 1968.
Thousands of young Parisian students filled the streets, singing hymns, holding signs and banners demanding to release political dissidents and activists who were arrested and placed in jail a few weeks earlier. Night potential revolutionaries barricaded the Latin quarter, determined not to retreat until, until the government met their demands. The revolution that changed Russia, China and Cuba, finally arrived to France. Exploitation of the poor working class finally reached its boiling point, and a Grand uprising, like fire, will soon cover the entire country and possibly the whole world. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, this did not happen. Many protesters, young socialists and anarchists were convinced that revolution is inevitable and new forces finally swept away everything in its path the old. But the protests have not ended with a Bang, but a whimper. The leaders of the protesters agreed to a compromise with the French government. Students and workers returned to universities and factories. The revolution was over before it even started. But that moment was a turning point. This was the birth of postmodernism.
Who invented it?
The origin of the postmodernism took place in the 60-70-ies of XX century, when the modern era began to outlive itself, faced with the crisis of ideas. Superocean, which for many years was the world culture, has been declared by philosophers and writers of the dead: God (Nietzsche), author (Bart), the man (Camus, Heidegger). For the first time this term appeared in 1917 during the First world war in the work of von Pannwitz, R. «the Crisis of European culture». But the official beginning of postmodernism declared the article Leslie Fiedler’s «Cross the border, fill the ditches,» which the author published in Playboy magazine. And this bad above the strike and breathed life into this flow.
What’s it all about?
1. No with meta —
«Simplifying to the extreme, we consider «postmodern» distrust of meterscase. It is, of course, the result of the progress of science; but and progress, in turn, implies that mistrust… the Narrative function loses its functors, its great hero, great dangers, great trip and a great goal. It is sprayed in clouds of narrative language, but also denotative, prescriptive, descriptive» – Jean-Francois Liotard, «the postmodern Condition».Since time immemorial humanity is trying to identify and systematize the meaning of life, the universe and everything. Where did we come from? Where are we going? What awaits us at the destination of our journey? Many religions have kindly provided us with the illustration of an epic struggle between good and evil and the culmination in the Apocalypse. Others have argued that history can be reduced to a battle between the concepts, definitions, and philosophy. Others say that it is about the struggle between social classes.
Who is right? According to postmodernism, no one. Nothing and no one directs the course of our history. In the end, things just happen.» Or as they say, «shit happens». Only chaos and randomness, are responsible for the way the world works. Postmodern theory is applicable not only to history, but of the entire human world. If there is no real way of categorizing or measuring history, so there is no real way of categorizing or measuring what wouldn’t be there. Life is too complex to fit under the scope, conventions, and definitions. The world is unique in its diversity, to afford his share only on black and white.
«In the old days people who wanted to form, for example, a Frenchman, would be to study all the classics: theologians and tragedians and historians and philosophers, and, you know, the whole mental labor, which would have belonged to him… And not only that: twenty years ago he would have found in the literature signs of a struggle with authority, with secular views, he would be out of this fight realized that there was something else,» Leo Tolstoy «Anna Karenina».In 1963 the French philosopher and literary critic Jacques Derrida published his work, where he wrote that the main problem of humanity is the inability to find and interpret the contents of something. Our thoughts, our theories, our perspectives – all based on false premises. He called this process «deconstructionism». The meaning of the word is the «dismemberment» of structures (linguistic, semantic and grammatical, and mechanical) components. The word «dismantled» into components, aware of the value of each element, and then collected back. It was assumed that this procedure will «remove» text to the identity of the author, to isolate the pure sense.
3. The adoption
«The mind is a tool of thinking, not by thinking. Human thinking is its nostalgia» – Camus, «the Myth of Sisyphus».If nothing can be predefined and there is no absolute truth, what is a person to occupy yourself? The postmodern answer is simple: Choose. The French philosopher albert Camus, who in large measure have contributed to the emergence of post-modern philosophy, argued that life just doesn’t make sense. Definition, classification, grandiose picture of what should be the way the universe works – it all just keeps us from what we truly want and can be.
What does this mean for us?
For all the radical doubt and relativism, which are included in the concept of postmodernism, considered that philosophy is deeply pessimistic. Unlike other philosophies, postmodernism is not looking for and not answers, not trying to submit a set of final conclusions about the nature of the Universe. In the modern world, full of conflicting ideas and truths, we need a way to interact efficiently with all of them. We must open ourselves to ourselves. Every new idea, every new experience, every new interpretation has some value. And people who argue that believe in something are likely to be the most ignorant of us all. Arm yourself with skepticism, tolerance, and sense of adventure to get through all the UPS and downs. Always make yourself. Always look for something new and rejoice the essence of this search. Life is a crazy rollercoaster extreme: why waste your time to learn the mechanics and think about what lies in the design of this attraction? Just enjoy the ride!
