5 gender stereotypes that used to be just the opposite
Women are different from men. It is a fact. For example, that a woman can bear children, and the man — no. There is another fact, for example, that people are usually stronger than women. But there are many controversial issues that are not caused by human nature, how many stereotypes. For example, the controversial point is that women are stupider than men. Many years ago, it was believed that women could read and write not able to, and if you learn, you will certainly lose the ability to give birth. But that didn’t happen: today, women are successful in that, and another, and third.
An interesting feature was that some of the modern stereotypes about men and women has changed over time. Today we made for you a compilation of such stereotypes, so you understand how human morality and culture are volatile and why you should try to respect ladies. So, five gender stereotypes that have been reversed.
1. «Pink for girls».
Here there is a strange stereotype, which many support. When the light appears a girl, her room, the bed and clothes become exclusively pink. In fact, the little girl absolutely do not care, but the parents stubbornly adorn images of flowers, berries and Hello Kitty.
Until 1918 was deeply do not care what color children’s diapers, much more important, will survive whether it is baby or not. However, interestingly, if the child did not survive during childbirth, people of the past as something not very worried, and gave birth to another and another — the more chances that will survive. But in 1918, a newspaper wrote an article that pink is more suited for a boy and blue is the opposite for girls. This is explained by the fact that the color pink is blood on the white officer’s shirt, it inspires courage and bravery. After the Second world war the standards have changed a little, the pink was a female color, and some people still think dudes in pink gay. By the way, recommend you look at a photograph of a girl from the past: her leather knee-high boots, dominatrix right!
2. Men don’t cry.
Also known stereotype. If a man cries, he lost control and fell apart. And generally behaves like a woman!
But in Ancient Greece to shed tears meant that a man is a man and very masculine. Odysseus shed tears, some characters were crying and they performed feats! The tears were not considered shameful. But you can say that in Greece, everything was completely gay. Then we say that cried and skandinavskii ancient hero Beowulf, and medieval knights, and especially liked the fact the samurai. In the nineteenth century, crying was a symbol of honesty, strength and faith, not an indication that someone has given up the slack. Here and so everything changes.
3. PMS makes women irrational and unbearable
A very common stereotype. And, surprisingly, some adequate men admit that a girl can be smart, be passionate about something as much as a man (and not just the clothes and the desire to conquer somebody), can cut a man in sparring, but it becomes unbearable if she has PMS.
Despite the considerable hormonal revolt during menstruation, the most that can happen to a woman’s mind is a complete shambles. Most women, at a conservative statement of the German scientists during PMS do not shout and get angry, and just lay down in the back and are in complete decline. And all because of PMS — it hurts, most women have during menstruation is very severe pain that much exhaust, so they are not up to fighting. If a woman is angry and wants to fight, then most likely she’s just angry and wants to quarrel.
4. Gay men are feminine and lesbians are too manly
If in a bad film or book is gay or lesbian, or they’re too feminine (gay) or too masculine (in the case of lesbians). Of course, gays have a lot in common with women, but in fact too feminine gay men — a phenomenon even takes place, but not all gays are like that. Strange to say, but, according to one American society, gays-the assets (less liabilities) wildly like to carry the iron to swing and measure binuhay. Yes and these dudes also did not call feminine: beat on the spot, if I say that it is a woman. Behave as women, gays and lesbians who behave like men, attempt to play a more familiar and traditional role in society. So masculine Buchi — it’s just a ridiculous attempt to seize the initiative.
In the XIX century the high society gave would be stereotypical thinking person the idea that it is surrounded entirely gay, which is better described as a fag. Men ultimately followed their appearance, among them was the custom to kiss each other on the lips at the meeting and to walk hand in hand. Before the release of the men gathered as long as women. The man had to twist his mustache, put in Kok, to cover skin defects powder or dough, tint the lips, choose a bright bow or scarf, put on a ton of clothes. The color that dressed men, were even brighter than in women. The same ratio was observed for almost the whole of the Renaissance and the following centuries up to the twentieth century. But in the Renaissance it was considered normal to engage in bisexual relations — in short, it’s totally not bro.
5. There are women’s responsibilities, and there are male
This is the most common stereotype. Probably. There are women’s responsibilities, and there are men. In fact, this stereotype has appeared recently. In ancient times it was believed that the woman was the homemaker, that is sat in the cave, and the man dragged the mammoth in the house. Actually it was a bit wrong. Hunted most often most strong men, and let the mammoth a huge animal, but it was used mostly for clothing and raw materials. More than 70 percent of the food produced over the women, children and the elderly through the small gathering and hunting. In these events took part more weak men returned from hunting strong. Children nursed the whole tribe, as well as cooked food. Of course, that not all tribes, but the majority of anthropologists observed this trend.
No further division into women’s and men’s responsibilities. Means, strict. «Men mostly went to the war — you say, — and woman was considered unable to fight.» The fact that in the Middle and later century was considered incapable and men of the lower strata. In most cultures, both ancient and not so, society was divided into so-called layers: a strong powerful team of artisans and peasants. The latter is not just fought: they were forbidden to fight. In the X century the peasants of some European countries were forbidden to organize national competitions on a throwing of horseshoes, wrestling and running. Why? Not rebelled! Who wants to have at hand a strong nation? In addition, the simplest outfit cost well, just very expensive.
Let women and was considered to be below men, but some people cooking was a man’s job, and tanned skin — women’s. Some men to the XIX century considered a normal thing to change diapers when the child, because the division of labour, especially among the peasants, was not — it was done. Although there were individuals who sincerely believed all the housework of women, especially in Tsarist Russia. But when there is a separation of the professions? When in the XIX century the industrial revolution started, the men went to the factory, and women could only think of the movement for motherhood. Then the separation of male and female cases remained.
