Such records for years described all the important events, and each time the text began with the phrase «In summer …», which means «In the year…». Hence was formed the name. What is the record? This description of events by year.
Like this existed not only in Russia. For example, in the famous Byzantine people kept their history through Chronicles, and in Europe there are annals.
Russian Chronicles are considered monuments of ancient literature, and on them is based the history of Russia and Eastern Slavic lands. The first representatives of such records appeared about the eleventh century in Kiev while the events described in them, date back to the ninth century.
There are about five thousand such literary monuments, but almost no originals. When written historical evidence repeatedly rewritten and remade. Thus, from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century created lists are rewritten texts. Depending on who it is and when we created such a list, he was distinguished as used in expressions and on the very events that it was decided to include in the text. In this regard, it is safe to say that primary historical sources are already there, and preserved chronicle is a kind of collection of selected recorded events.
There are some of the most famous lists.

The differences on the terrain
Regardless of what the record was taken as a basis, it varied greatly in connection with the locality where it was copied. First appeared in Novgorod, which focused on the baptism of their city. These records are highly compressed, written exclusively business style. There are no liberties and poetic colors.
