What is ecology — definition

Ecology is a discipline that involves different areas of knowledge. To understand what is ecology, it is necessary to decipher the term. It comes from the Greek word oikos, which means «housing».

History of ecology

It is believed that the environmental pioneer was Aristotle. Even back in the 4th century BC, he laid the first stones in the base of the pyramid called «ecology», describing basic concepts in his work «History of animals». In it, he gave the classification of animals and complements its detailed description.

The concept of «ecology» was first mentioned by a biologist from Germany in the name of Ernest Haeckel in 1866. Initially this term had a purely biological nature.

In his writings, the German scientist wrote, that ecology studies the relationships between organisms and where they live. This was the starting point for the emergence of ecology. Over the years, the meaning of the term has expanded. Many experts have researched this concept and introduced additions.

Ecology became popular in the mid 20th century, when scientists began to think that people negatively affect the environment.

At the same time, the term has been actively used in academic writings and the media.

The definition of ecology

There is a clear definition of what is ecology. It is the science that deals with the study of living things, their relationships with each other and with the environment.

Ecology focuses on the relationships in the super-organismal systems, their structure and stages of operation.

Ecology explores the life of organisms in their environment. Everything that surrounds us affects our existence. Moreover, this relationship has clear laws that can be traced, and then make certain conclusions. Environment is subdivided into public, private and population, also highlight the ecology of ecosystems and communities.

Environmental problems

In our days researchers with dozens of global environmental problems that threaten our planet:

  • Pollution of the biosphere. Constant growth of the industry, deforestation and the emission of harmful substances can destroy the planet. The challenge for environmentalists is to find a way out of the situation. Non-waste production, recycling and garbage sorting are the first steps towards saving the Earth
  • Reduction of fresh water reserves. Their number and without is negligible, only 6% of the total weight of the water. And this figure is declining every year. Humanity is facing «water famine»
  • The problem of the ozone layer. Ozone is a special form of oxygen. This layer can be compared with a protective screen located at 15-45 km from the earth. If its destruction will come to around 50%, then the UV radiation will begin to destroy all life on the planet. Loss of vision, skin cancer, different mutations – this is an incomplete list of accidents that may occur after the elimination of the ozone layer by 50 %
  • Reducing the number of minerals. Their stock is quickly exhausted. Future generations may be left without coal and oil. Scientists develop new principles of non-waste raw material extraction, to use the minerals more efficiently
  • The restructuring of the climate – global warming. This is the most popular environmental problem due to the constant rise in the average temperature on the planet
  • Acid rain. Precipitation, which pose threats to health. The reason lies in the pollution and harmful emissions, which are then returned in the form of rain with low hydrogen index

Environmentalists looking for a way out. They want to bring the planet from environmental crisis.
