Useful properties of barberry
The word «barberry» from an Association with the eponymous candy, have a characteristic of the unforgettable smell and sour taste.
But apart from making chocolates on the basis of juice from the berries of the barberry, this plant has a wide range of applications in traditional medicine, homeopathy and folk remedies.
The barberry belongs to the barberry family, genus shrub. Cultivated plants are grown almost all over the world, except Australia and Antarctica.
Barberry undemanding to temperature and weather conditions, it is quite easy to grow, require little care. The berries of barberry are elongated, oblong form, color bright red or almost black.
The food can be eaten only fully ripe fruits, because not ripe berries can be poisonous.
Useful properties of barberry
The uniqueness of the barberry is that for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes, you can use all parts of the shrub. Useful properties of barberry are maintaining a large number of carotenoids, tannins, organic and pectin, various macronutrients, vitamins C and E.
From the leaves to obtain vitamins K, C and E, malic and citric acids, carotenoids, resinous substance. In leaves and roots has 11 alkaloids and tannins. The bark and branches of the barberries are also used in the manufacture of traditional medicines.
Health benefits of barberry
In official medicine there are three known drugs based on extracts of barberry:
- — berberine (berberine bisulfate) is used in cholecystitis and exacerbation of gallstone disease;
- — gallitin – indicated for inflammations of the stomach and intestines, the various dysfunctions of the GASTROINTESTINAL tract;
- — alcohol tincture of barberry – used to stop uterine bleeding, to relieve attacks of gallstone disease. The analogue of this tincture is easy to make at home.
It is necessary to take 20 g of dried leaves of the plant and 100 g of rubbing alcohol (70%), leave for about two weeks in a dark, dry place at room temperature. The resulting tincture has a slightly sour flavor and dark yellow color.
In traditional medicine the beneficial properties of barberry found wider application. That’s not the whole list of diseases treatable by flowers, berries, leaves, roots and bark of this amazing plant:
- — a morbid state of the liver and gallbladder;
- — bowel dysfunction;
- — diseases of the GASTROINTESTINAL tract and spleen;
- — bronchopulmonary disease;
- — diseases of the eye;
- — inflammation in the oral cavity;
- — rheumatism, gout, arthritis;
- — uterine bleeding of different etiology;
- — slow recovery after a difficult birth;
- — toxicosis;
- — some diseases of the heart;
- — insulin independent diabetes.
Folk remedies based on that have properties to increase the appetite, tone the body. In addition, they are used as antipyretic, antiseptic and laxative.
A few recipes from barberry
From the berries: take 1 tsp. the fruit and leaves of barberry, pour boiling water (200 ml) and allow the mixture to infuse for 1 hour. Delicious and nutritious, tonic tea is ready. To make this tea, preferably on a regular basis. It is used as a means of prevention of respiratory diseases.
From the leaves: you need two tablespoons of dried leaves of barberry pour 200 ml of boiling water and leave for 1 hour in a thermos. After straining the infusion should take 1 tbsp. three to five times per day during the month.
Used in painful conditions of the liver and gallbladder, as febrifuge and cholagogue.
Of the flowers: 1 tbsp. l. color barberry pour 300 ml of pure cold water, boil and allow broth to simmer for 10 minutes on low fire. Received
the mixture should infuse for about half an hour, take two teaspoons three times a day.
The broth helps with hypertension and heart pain. They also relieve inflammation of the eyes, what eyes washed 4-5 times a day.
From other parts of barberry: dried and powdered components (bark, roots) mix in equal parts. Take 1 tablespoon of the mixture pour 200 ml of pure water. Boil for 5 minutes. Can be used in sprains, dislocations and fractures.
Make lotions and compresses as needed, and drink 2 tablespoons of broth with milk (100 ml) three times per day.
