MOMORDICA (Momordica) is a medicinal vine of the family Cucurbitaceae


MOMORDICA belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae.

There are about 20 species of this plant, whose homeland is sub-tropical and tropical region.

This culture grows in Africa, Australia and Asia and is divided into annual and perennial vines.

Of the total number of cultivate 2 species of this plant: cochinchina and garanzia.

Cochinchina MOMORDICA (Momordica cochinchinensis)

Annual twining vine, the fruits of which are widely used in Vietnamese medicine. Also MOMORDICA cochinchina known as a plus.

Grow this plant in Southeast Asia. In Europe the vine is also cultivated, but in greenhouses and Botanical gardens.

Liana stands out three-parted leaves, yellow flowers (vary in shape) and fruits in the form of an ellipse with a small oblong outgrowths.

The fruit of 10-12 cm in diameter contain large hard seeds with an unpleasant odor.

The healing properties are manifested in the content of useful minerals: carotene, momordicin, lycopene, samotokin and so on. Obtained hook oil treated burns, wounds and ulcers.


It has a calming effect, useful for people with impaired vision. For example, beta-carotene in the Vietnamese oil contains 15 times more than in carrots.

The Vietnamese seeds are used in inflammations, ulcers and as a diuretic. Generally in medicine uses whole plant with leaves and roots.

CHARANTIA MOMORDICA (Momordica charantia) – bitter cucumber

This is also an annual plant of the gourd family. Differs from the preceding species by the pentagonal stems with longitudinal grooves, and a moustache.

Leaves Garantie flattened kidney-shaped and notched section 5-9 of the blades. The flowers are unisexual with yellow petals.

The fruits as they Mature from green color turns orange with a rough and wrinkled surface. Seeds red-brown.

Fruits contain lots of vitamins and minerals, are very popular in Asia. Their fried, boiled and marinated. Shoots, leaves and even the flowers also are eaten.

Juice the Vietnamese used to treat skin diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and so on.

Generally this plant is used for many diseases due to its medicinal qualities and rich content of nutrients: calcium, potassium, beta-carotene.

Scientists use juice «bitter cucumber» in the preparation of drugs for malaria and cancer.
