The cultivation of heliotrope

 Location and lighting

This plant is actively growing and blooming under intense lighting. If the pot is standing in the shadows at the back of the room or on the Northern side, it stretched shoots and flowers grow small and pale.

Heliotrope likes a moderately high summer temperatures (22-23°C) and in winter it is much lower – it is desirable to maintain about 6°C.

Watering and humidity

In summer the plant needs abundant watering while watching that soil ball from drying out. In winter, water less often and in smaller amounts, but drying should not be allowed. High humidity is not needed, so spray it is not necessary.

From March to October requires regular feeding standard flower fertilizer. Doing this 3 times a month. In mid-autumn, feeding is stopped.

Transplantation and propagation

Every spring, the heliotrope transplanted into a larger pot, before making its pruning. The most suitable substrate – a mixture of turf, leaf, clay earth and sand in equal proportions.

Propagated in the period from February to April with cuttings are separated from the mother plant (it is desirable to take a middle-aged instance), are seated in individual pots, warming first substrate to 22-25°C.

You can also propagate by seed sown in the ground in March. Once the seedlings reach 10 cm, you need prischipnut tops — then the young plant will have less stretch and begins to custimise.

Pests and fight with them

Most often, the tree heliotrope amaze spider mites, aphids and whiteflies. For pest control the leaves and stems are treated with special tools – aktelikom or fufanon.

Sometimes, if the plant is weakened, there is also gray mold or rust in this case the treatment is conducted with fungicides that are sold in specialized stores.
