Caralluma — care at home
Caralluma – stunted survivor from Eastern and southern regions of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and India.
In nature it prefers sandy and rocky soils. It grows slowly, constantly giving new shoots.
The stalks are round, thick and succulent, gray-green or olive tint. They can be upright or prostrate.
Blooms small flowers with a slightly unpleasant odor. Yellow, brown, red flowers of a plant pollinated by flies during the week until wilt.
Location and lighting
At least 6 hours a day caralluma need bright diffused light. Put a flowerpot near the window on a hot Sunny day is not necessary, as this can cause leaf scorch.
Caralluma grows well at room temperatures. In winter it should not fall below +15°C, although for a short time the plant can tolerate lower temperatures to +5°C.
Watering and humidity
In the spring and summer watered the same as all the succulents, when dry out the top layer of soil.
At the end of autumn – with just one watering per month in mid-winter it is possible not to water, Feb – watering is carried out every three weeks. High humidity is not required, it tolerates dry air.
In spring and summer, when it starts active growth caralluma fed fertilizer for cacti, the norm is diluted half with water.
Transplantation and propagation
In cramped conditions, when the root system has filled the pot, Caralluma blooms more likely. That is why transplant it rarely, only in the case where the tightness of capacity was to delay the growth of a flower.
Transplant conducted in the spring in small clay pots, which promotes more rapid drying of the soil. Planted in the ground for succulents.
Propagated by seeds, stem cuttings and division. Seeds are sown in April on the lung surface soil (mixture of sand and peat) and germinated in the warmth.
Stem cuttings, previously dried, roots in moist soil, which after planting, give the cuttings to dry completely. Then again, abundantly watered. Propagated by division when transplanting: separate shoots with roots and planted in the ground.
Pests and fight with them
Infestation by pests is extremely rare. The appearance of scale insects or mealybugs plant wipe with a damp swab dipped in water or alcohol solution.
