Bokarneya — care at home
Bokarneya (or bokarneya) refers to succulent plants of the genus Nolina, she came to home gardeners from Mexico and the southern United States.
The plant has long, stiff, gathered in a bundle of leaves.
Location and lighting
This is a southern plant light-requiring, tolerate heat well, so the pot is placed on the South side of the house.
In the summer it grows well on the East or West window. In winter, the plant suffers from a lack of sunlight, therefore, it is desirable to provide additional lighting.
During the summer, beaucarnea most favorable temperature is from 20 to 25°C. At this time, it can be put on the street, the balcony to take to the country while ensuring there was no draft.
In winter, the plant often goes dormant. During this period, it is desirable to reduce the temperature to +10°C.
Watering and humidity
Like many succulents, bokarneya tolerates drought. It stores moisture in the stem and can survive without irrigation.
Watering only in spring and summer, between watering letting the soil dry out well. If autumn and winter the plant is kept at a low temperature and is at rest, it is not water, if the temperature is high – keep the summer watering. It is very important not to overdo it with the watering, as it is very harmful to plants.
High level of humidity this succulent is not necessary, so it is sufficient to periodically wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust.
This plant grows best if it is in the spring and summer from time to time (after 2 weeks) to feed alternately using mineral and organic fertilizers. Do not use concentrated fertilizers, reducing two times the rate specified in the instructions.
Transplantation and propagation
Young plants are transplanted regularly in the spring, and adults – when the roots completely envelop the earth com.
To do this, use light, non-oily substrate, for example, consisting of turf, leaf, peat soil and sand (all components take 1 part, and sod – 2 parts).
Soil is added as lumps of clay and small broken bricks. On top of the soil it is desirable to cover the fine gravel.
Pot for this plant is better to take a shallow and rather narrow, as the roots grows more breadth.
Propagated by seeds or bokarneya lateral appendages. Seeds two days kept in a solution of potassium permanganate, the ones that sank to the bottom, that is a healthy are sown in soil and kept under glass in a lighted place.
Side shoots that appear in spring on the plant, separated and, after a day in a solution of plant hormone, at a slight incline planted in the ground.
Pests and fight with them
The plant may appear perniciosus, spider mite and thrips. About their appearance is evidenced by yellowing leaves.
Pests are removed with a swab soaked in soapy water, after the leaves treated with Malathion or actellic.
