Varieties of acanthus

There are about two dozen varieties of acanthus, each of which differs in the form of leaves, appearance of flowers and overall size of the plant. The most common are two species of acanthus:

  • Acanthus sharp has a Mediterranean origin and reaches a height of up to 1.5 meters. For this kind of a characteristic purplish-white flowers and thin prickly leaves. Blooms of this species during the last two summer months.
  • Acanthus soft first appeared in the South-West of Europe, where he can have a four-foot height. In Russian conditions this flower usually grows up to 70 cm, This perennial is noteworthy for its large leaves and large inflorescences, which combines a white Corolla with purple stripes and purple, not spiny bracts.

 How to grow acanthus?

Acanthus grows best in conditions fertile light soil. Earthen environment should be neutral or slightly alkaline.
