Afelyandra — care at home
Afelyandra that belongs to the acanthus family, has come to our home from the tropics of South America.
In the indoor environment best survives one of its kind – «afelandra protruding».
It differs oblong, pointed at the tips of the leaves with a creamy or silvery streaks.
Afelyandra blooms usually in the summer.
When the content of this plants first of all you need to maintain a good for the plant temperature during the period of active growth and flowering-not below +22°C, but not above +24°Mon. After flowering the temperature can be reduced to +12-14°C.
As for the lighting, for growing aphelandra it should be bright, but direct sunlight is bad for plants. Direct access to the sun let the plant only in winter.
Pour aphelandra must be abundantly: in the summer about 3 times a week, and in winter 1 time per week, make sure that the soil doesn’t dry out.
This plant likes high humidity, so three times a week, it sprayed. With the exception of the flowering period – this time aphelandra sprayed not more than 1 time a week.
Fed aphelandra regular fertilizer for indoor plants and flowers 1 every 2 weeks during active growth and every week during flowering.
To afelyandra bloomed regularly, after the end of the flowering period the head the old flowers removed and at some time reduce the temperature to +11-13°C, provide good lighting, and occasionally spray the leaves with warm water and moderately watered.
Propagated afelyandra young shoots that appear in spring. For planting a young sapling, prepare a mixture consisting of 4 parts loam and one part river sand.
Shoots were cut from the growth point and a few leaves, planted in prepared soil in a small container and maintained at a temperature in the range of +24°C, abundant watering.
After about a month the seedlings are transplanted into larger flower pot.
If the plant is starting to hurt, likely, allowed some mistakes in care. So, fall leaves usually indicate too high a temperature or insufficient watering.
Brown spots on leaves indicate too intense light. If the plant withers, it may be exposed to drafts.
If afelyandra gives more than small leaves and no blooms, it is desirable to add fertilizer. The main pests attacking the plant – aphids, scale, mealybug.
