Aerides — care at home
Unfortunately, not every gardener familiar with this beautiful exotic plants as aerides.
But this is a great creation of nature with white-lilac flowers emitting pleasant scent, deserves to be an important element of the decor.
The origin of aerides and history of the name
The birthplace of aerides there is a part of the great Himalayas, which is located in South Vietnam. Its name is a plant obliged the Greek language in which the word «air» sounds like «aer».
Due to such a relationship that aerides has a lot of roots on the surface of the earth, which in antiquity formed the opinion that this plant feeds from the air.
In fact, aerides is a very water-loving plant. Therefore, in conditions of insufficient humidity by aerial roots, the flower is trying to expand its area of suction.
Because of this, aerides can grow even in the trees, penetrating through the bark like root sprouts.
Aerides belongs to the Orchid family and is a perennial evergreen plant. In good conditions it can reach a height of 1.5 meters.
Narrow leaves up to 20 cm, are arranged oppositely on the stem have a dense and fleshy structure.
The flower stalks emerging from the axils of the paired leaves, can have a half-meter height. Inflorescence presented in the form of a spike, or a cylindrical brush.
Each flower has a diameter of 3-4 cm and consists of six petals. The color of the inflorescence often white with purple and red inclusions. The flowering period of aerides usually continues throughout the summer.
Aerides as a potted plant feels good in greenhouse conditions, open field and pot cultivation. For the life of the plant has been long, it is necessary to provide special conditions.

In summer, the flower requires regular and abundant watering, in winter the amount of moisture necessary to reduce.

In spring and summer it is necessary weekly make-up of aerides with organic or mineral fertilizers.
In autumn and winter, to feed the flower is not necessary. Subjected to pruning a plant is also not necessary.
If spring is necessary, it is possible to transplant aerides. At the same soil mixture should consist of three parts of ground roots of a fern, the same amount of peat and two parts fallen leaves. In addition, the composition must add one part charcoal and pine bark.
Aerides may be subjected to the negative effects of pests such as:

- Scale insects are small insects of not more than 5 mm, covered with a waxy shield. Coccidae such shells do not have. The larvae of these parasites, as well as females, are attached to the surface of the plants and suck the juice from them.
The fight against all these pests is a difficult and lengthy process. Therefore it is best to ensure aerides complete care to avoid infection.
