    Sergei Bondarchuk biography

    Sergei Fedorovich Bondarchuk – Ukrainian origin. He was born in September 1920 in Kherson region, in the village of Bilozerka. Childhood Bondarchuk was held in Eysk, and the youth in Taganrog, where passion for the theatre and cinema led him to the stage of the local drama theatre. The desire to choose the profession of an actor was supported by his father-an engineer, who believed the craft of acting is a frivolous occupation. But he had to accept the choice of the son, as Sergei was adamant in his desire.

    In 1938 Bondarchuk arrived at the Rostov theatre school, which did not finish due to the outbreak of the great Patriotic war. Sergey Fedorovich went through the war and only at its end completed the training. He enrolled in the VGIK Gerasimov, selecting acting Department. He graduated from high school in 1948.

    Acting career

    Immediately after the theatre Sergey Fedorovich Bondarchuk was recruited in the film Studio «Mosfilm», but in parallel he worked in the Theater-Studio of film actor at Cook.

    Actor biography of Sergei Bondarchuk began with the role of the underground Andrew Valko in the film «Young guard». Soon aspiring actor appeared in the film «Cavalier of the Golden Star.» But fame the novel brought the main role in the film «Taras Shevchenko». The film was endorsed by Joseph Stalin, resulting in Sergei Bondarchuk in 31 year received the title of people’s artist of the USSR.     In the Soviet period Sergei Bondarchuk was not the only actor who was allowed to play in foreign films. He appeared in the Italian film «In Rome was the night» Roberto Rossellini and Yugoslav film «Battle on Neretva» Veljko Bulaich.

    Often Sergey Fedorovich starred in films that he himself directed. So in 1959, he appeared in the lead role in his film «the Destiny of man» where he played together with Elina Bystritskaya. The artist perfectly conveys the character Pierre Bezukhov in the film-epopee «War and peace» in 1966.

    But critics point out that the most successful roles of a novel — paintings of the 1970’s. This is Astrov in «Uncle Vanya» by Andrei Konchalovsky, Akademik Kurchatov in the ribbon «Select purpose,» father Sergius in the eponymous film, he’s in the film-drama «the gadfly».

    Last acting role was in the movie «Case in the airport» and «Storm over Russia». The last film was released in 1992. After 2 years of Sergei Fedorovich did not.


    Director’s biography Sergei Bondarchuk started in 1959, when he was appointed Director of the film Studio «Mosfilm». In the same year he made his directorial debut on the screens out the picture «man» from a story by Sholokhov, where Bondarchuk also appeared as the main hero of the tape. The film was very warmly received by the audience of the country and won the Lenin prize, the Grand Gold prize of the International film festival in Moscow and many other awards.

    Absolute achievement in world of Russian cinema becomes movie-the Saga of Sergei Fyodorovich «War and peace». The adaptation of great works of Leo Tolstoy brought the Director world fame. This work he dedicated 6 years of his life. The first series «Andrey Bolkonsky» was released in 1966. Then annually – three series. «War and peace» Bondarchuk brought her the award «Oscar» and the diploma of the film festival in Venice. The film was screened in 117 countries around the world.

    Soon the master had directed the film «Waterloo», where he confirmed his talent staging grandiose battle scenes combined with a thorough psychological study of the characters. Another masterpiece the Director was the film «They fought for the Motherland», released in 1975. For the first time in the Soviet cinema of Sergei Bondarchuk showed the bitterness and drama of the retreat of the Soviet army. It’s not like many officials, but the movie was so good, that received the State prize of the RSFSR.

    In 1978 Sergey Fedorovich was able to realize his dream and filmed the story of Anton Chekhov «the Steppe». And in 1982 appeared his new film «Red bells» the works of John reed. For this work he was awarded the State prize of the USSR.

    In 1989-1990, Director along with producer from Italy Enzo Rispoli worked on the production of the epic painting «the Quiet don». It was the last film directed. Unfortunately, during the life of Sergei Fedorovich never saw the release of «the quiet don». Only in 2006 the painting was finished and articulate. In late autumn 2006 8-part tape was first shown in one of the cinemas of the capital, and then went on the big screens of the country.

    The great Director did not 20 October 1994. Sergei Bondarchuk is buried in the Novodevichy cemetery.

    Personal life

    The first wife of Sergei Bondarchuk was Yevgeny Belousov. It is not known whether the couple married officially, or the marriage was civil. After the war, Bondarchuk and Belousova dispersed. He went to the capital, she remained in Rostov. From this Union came the first son of a novel – Alex.

    The second wife of the Director was actress Inna Makarova, whom he met in the movie «the Young guard». In this marriage a daughter, Natalia, who became a Director like his father.

    In the late 50’s Sergei Bondarchuk married Irina Skobtseva, with whom he lived for 35 years. With her artist met during the filming of «Othello.» To this marriage were born two children – Alyona Bondarchuk (died in 2009) and Fyodor Bondarchuk.
