Felix Yusupov: biography
Felix Felixovich Yusupov, count Sumarokov-Elston, was the last of the famous branches of the Yusupov princes. He tried to do many things, but went down in history as one of the murderers of Grigory Rasputin. Later, while in exile, Yusupov even wrote two books of memoirs, the fees for which were the main source of income. In addition, Felix was one of the first people that managed to win a lawsuit against the production company and receive compensation for moral damage in the form of a fairly tidy sum.
Yusupov was the youngest son of count Felix Sumarokov-Elston and his wife Princess Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova. It should be noted that the Princess wanted and were expecting a daughter, so when Felix was born, she did not treat him as a boy dressed in pink dresses, accustomed to the decorations and even taught to paint. A strange Caprice of his mother has left a huge imprint on all subsequent life of this unusual man. For many years the main entertainment Yusupov was in a dress, trying to be incognito, to walk along the Boulevard or dine in the restaurant. About the strangeness of the «Golden boy» said the Russian to know he was even accused of homosexuality, although actual proof of this one had not.
Felix graduated from a prestigious private school, and later Oxford University, where he founded the Russian society, as it has always been and until the end of life remained a patriot of his homeland, but only in the monarchical option. Young Felix and his older brother Nicholas was a passionate theater fans. Moreover, young people themselves were on stage. The witnesses claimed that Felix had an outstanding acting talent, which was especially noticeable in the art of transformation in other people. And it’s not just about convincing enough performance of female roles, but also the creation on the stage of very realistic images of male characters from commoners to cardinal Richelieu.
21 Yusupov suddenly became the only heir to a family fortune of his family. The fact that his older brother Nikolai was killed in a duel from the hands of count Arvid Manteuffel, who thus defended the honor of his wife, seduced by Yusupov senior. However, as will be shown by further life to enjoy the richness of full Felix not meant to be.
The Murder Of Rasputin
In 1916, Felix Yusupov and Dmitri Pavlovich Romanov, brother-in-law, together with the Deputy of the state Duma Vladimir Purishkevich organized a conspiracy against the other and close to the Russian Emperor Nicholas II, Grigory Rasputin. Felix told later that each of the three men independently came to the conclusion that all the troubles of Russia in the early XX century associated with the name «Royal elders». When they began to discuss, then came to the conclusion that Rasputin must be stopped at all costs. But the initiator and voplotitelem conspiracy is Yusupov.
On the penultimate day of 1916, he invited Rasputin to his home and under the pretext to show the place, where the usual feasting with guests, lured to the basement. Recommending Gregory to leave St. Petersburg and having been refused, Felix pulled out a gun and shot Rasputin. Evidence in the investigator’s office three conspirators will be significantly different from each other and much at odds with the facts discovered by the investigation. Clearly we can say only that the old was three shots fired, and later the dead body was taken by car to the Petrovsky bridge and dumped into the river.
The family of the Emperor was very indignant act Yusupov and his accomplices. Most likely, they would have waited for the death sentence, but because of participation in the case of Prince Dmitry the investigation dragged on. Meanwhile, Purishkevich was sent to the front, Romanov, to Persia and Prince Felix was expecting house arrest at the family estate in Kursk province. But the death of Rasputin resulted in the February and later the October revolution, the Yusupov went abroad, where in any society appears primarily as «the killer». By the way, the husband would later write the book of memoirs «the End of Rasputin» and «Memoirs» about these tragic events.
It should be emphasized that Yusupov was a patriot and a most generous person. During the First world war, he at his own expense he organized hospitals in Saint-Petersburg. In the first of them created in the house on Foundry Avenue, Felix worked himself until he received permission to go on a one-year officer training in the corps. Looking ahead, it is worth adding that during the Second world war, Prince Yusupov, takes a very interesting position: he did not want to support the Nazis who have occupied France, but also categorically refused the offer to return to St. Petersburg, citing the rejection of the Soviet Union as a state.
After the October revolution, together with the family, the husband leaves Russia forever. He first settled in Malta, and later moved to London and from there to Paris. Sold all the jewels that were able to take out with them, Yusupov got the house in the Bois de Boulogne on the street Pierre Guerin, Felix where he lived until the end of life. Interestingly, in their estate in Russia remained much property, the looting of the house lasted at least a week. But, even much poorer, Felix continued to help the refugees. Together with his mother, he organized a special Fund, and gave shelter in his house.
In 20-ies of the Yusupov along with his wife opened a fashion house «Irfé,» which becomes a unique phenomenon for France. The fact that models and even seamstresses in «Irfé» spoke the Countess, and Duchess, for which the fashion house Yusupov was called the most aristocratic. Designers «Irfé» focused on the Russian style, used silk painting, and the main innovation was the introduction of a completely unprecedented phenomenon – the so-called sporty style in everyday clothes. The rise of the popularity was so rapid that it can be compared only as a snapshot of the fall. It is time of the great depression, and Felix could not be reconstructed and continued to lead a lavish lifestyle, so the company went bankrupt.
The budget was to be funded through the issuance of books about Rasputin, and through unheard-of insolence – the filing of a claim on the American film company «Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer». The fact that in 1932 the film «Rasputin and the Empress», which States that the Yusupov’s wife was the mistress of Gregory. Felix, who were all convinced of the futility of his actions, submits to the court and manages to prove the unsubstantiated and unfounded the script of the film. The company «MGM» pays him 25 thousand pounds, which in those days was considered a huge amount. In addition, this precedent because he is now in the credits of the movies they write phrases like «novel» and «resemblance to real persons is not premeditated».
The young Felix was considered one of the most beautiful men among the Russian nobility. Many of the fairer sex went through his mind. It was rumored that both men have repeatedly observing such sickly appearance. But all suspicions about homosexual Yusupov dispelled, married to Princess Irina Alexandrovna Romanova, the native niece of the Emperor Nicholas II. In 1915 the couple have a daughter, Irina, godchildren which, incidentally, were the Emperor and his wife Empress Maria Feodorovna.
In old age, a few months before his death, Felix and Irina’s adopted 18-year-old Mexican Victor Manuel Contreras. Later the young man became famous as a sculptor and painter. His works decorate the museums of many countries and is also represented in the Central squares in North America and in Europe.
By the way, Yusupov, too, once tried his hand in fine arts. After the publication of the first edition of the book of memories Felix suddenly took ink and watercolor, and has created a series of infernal portraits under the title «Monsters.» Just a few weeks they were painted 15 works, and more Felix never returned to this occupation. It is believed that these portraits are connected with the nightmares that haunted Yusupov life. About half of these drawings were stored in the gallery of Christian Butone.
Died the last heir of the famous family of princes Yusupovs, at the age of 80 years, 27 September 1967. He was buried in Paris, at the Russian cemetery in Sainte-geneviève-des-Bois in the same grave with his mother, Zinaida Nikolaevna. Interestingly, on the chest of the deceased put a cross cut from splinters from the coffin of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, who all his life he patronized. The wife of Felix Yusupov survived her husband for three years. Absolutely amazing history the house on Felix street Pierre Guerin. Shortly after the death of Princess Irina Alexandrovna, the house suddenly fell to the ground, reminding the witnesses of this picture of Edgar Allan PoE story «the fall of the house of usher».
